Podcasts, Congress, and Cable TV: The Happy Medium

Right now there’s a bit of discussion in the blogosphere about podcasting the US Congress. Attorney Ernest Miller started this ball rolling on his Corante blog. He asked, “Why doesn’t every single darn committee, subcommittee, whatever, have a podcast (in the future, broadcatch) of its hearings? Why isn’t there a floor podcast?” …It’s a great question, and the audience for this might be larger than you’d expect…

My Feed Lists: Moving Targets

For a few months now I’ve featured in the right-hand column of this blog links to lists of all the site, blog, and podcast feeds I subscribe to. When I first announced these lists, a lot of people downloaded them. However, my feed lists are perpetual works in progress. So if you haven’t checked out my lists for awhile, you might want to check out these updates. I’ve found many, many new gems. Here are a few highlights…

Bonus/Penalty Podcast: Open Mic Night (audio)

Whether this audio post is a bonus or penalty depends on your musical taste, and your tolerance for minimal recording technique and unprofessional behaviour. Still, I had fun doing it. Listen, if you dare…

Credibility: Whose News to Choose? (Audio)

We have met the gatekeepers, and they are us! Online media gives average people direct access to the kind of primary information that formerly only trained journalists would get. Plus, net users get exposed to a diversity of issues and perspectives that’s far broader than what mass media could ever present. Still, most of us were raised on mass media. We’re used to equating credibility with traditional journalistic news organizations. We used to know what “real news” was, and where you found it. We used to know whose news to believe. That was a very dangerous illusion. Now it’s time to dust off those critical thinking skills. This audio post offers some advice on how to get started…

Lessons in Bennish (audio)

It’s time for another audio edition of CONTENTIOUS! Today I have a very special guest: my friend and linguistics mentor Ben, who is one year old this week…

How to Receive and Listen to Podcasts

One of my readers just asked me: “I am not technical, have a Mac and an iPod and I would like to listen to Podcasts, try them out. Is there a step by step explanation that I can access that will walk me through how to get set up?” Here are the basics…

Vermin and Compassion (Online Vermin Series, Audio Note)

Now that I’m finally recovered from a despicable, tenacious headcold, here’s another audio edition of CONTENTIOUS. This is quick recap of what I’ve been covering in my “Handling Online Vermin” series, with some thoughts on the role of compassion in dealing with online vermin…

Female Podcasters: Here\’s Why This Matters, Adam…

Today I’ve added a couple of new female hosted/co-hosted shows to my Women in Podcasting List. The total number of shows on that list is currently 37 podcasts, plus one videolog. Also, I was pleased that Adam Curry, probably the world’s most popular podcaster, briefly mentioned my list in his Feb. 6 Daily Source Code show , and included a direct link to my list in his show notes. However, I was a bit disappointed with the way he seemed dismissive of the issue of women in podcasting. Here’s what he said…

Kill the Legalese! (Audio)

All right, I know I get way too worked up about this, but I have to say it: Legalese is destroying public discourse! (Show notes…)

How Organizations can Get Human and Credible with Blogs, Podcasts, and Journalism (audio)

Here is another audio edition of CONTENTIOUS. In this show I discuss how organizations (companies, nonprofits, institutions, agencies, etc.) can communicate more effectively and credibly in the age of online media. The secret is abandoning the common belief that your organization should speak with a single, monolithic voice. Nobody believes that. Organizations are made up of people. If your organization wishes to participate in the public conversation, start communicating like human beings. You can give the people within your organization a public voice (inside and outside your organization) through a weblog or podcast. This enhances your credibility, connections, and reach. In addition, applying journalistic practices to your communications (especially in a weblog or podcast) can further strengthen credibility. (Listen to the show, and read the show notes…)
