On yesterday’s edition of the radio/podcast show Future Tense, E-Media Tidbits editor Steve Outing offered his ideas on voluntary registration for news sites – in the form of registration requests placed on the top of every article. This would still be an annoyance to online readers, but a much less significant one than forced registration. Also, publishers could sweeten the pot by offering benefits in exchange for voluntary registration.
Outing (and others) have been saying this for a long time. I’m wondering why their simple message hasn’t sunk in yet. Why – oh why – do so many news organizations continue to cling to the forced-registration and paid-archives model? Who exactly is it within news organizations that has the final say on this particular decision?…

I’m finalizing handouts for the workshop I’m giving in Boulder, CO on Wed., “Very Basic Blogging.” This is intended for newcomers to the weblog world – including some folks who aren’t yet familiar with finding and reading weblogs. Therefore, I thought it would help to create a handout showing the anatomy of a typical blog posting. For this, I’ve chosen to show a recent excellent posting by one of my coaching clients, Heidi Miller: “Public Speaking Tip #1: No one expects you to know everything” Wanna see the handout?…

My “Women in Podcasting List” continues to grow – it now includes about 100 shows. Please check it out if you haven’t done so already, and let me know about any female hosted/cohosted podcast shows I don’t already have listed. Here are the most recent additions to my list…
Back on July 26, I participated in a panel discussion hosted by the Boulder Writers Alliance on the topic of “Trends in Today’s Media.” I’ve had a couple of very hectic links, and I just realized this morning that I’d neglected to post the audio from that session. Sorry about the delay. What struck me about this session is how much professional writers and editors (especially independent ones) need to think creatively about their field and work opportunities…
I haven’t gotten around to mentioning this here yet, but I was pleased to be invited to speak at Corante’s upcoming Podcast Hotel event. This is a special conference where podcasters basically take over an entire hotel for a few days. I’ll be speaking about women in podcasting. This conference was supposed to happen Sept. 6-8 in Portland, OR – but I just found out yesterday that it’s been postponed due to logistical difficulties with the site. Bummer. Well, I’m still planning on attending and speaking, as long as the new date doesn’t conflict with other commitments. And while we’re talking about Corante…
I’m still swamped with trying to post everything I need to post from the BlogHer conference and do my paying work. So for today, here’s the raw audio the panel session: “Suffragette Journalists — Op-Ed Pages of Our Own.” (More notes…)
I just packed my bag – tomorrow I’m heading off to the inaugural BlogHer conference being held this Saturday in Santa Clara, CA. Blogher is “a network for women bloggers to draw on for exposure, education, and community.” And it’s about damn time, too! Enough with the default boys’ club mentality, already! …Coincidentally, I’ve also recently agreed to speak on the topic of women in podcasting at Corante’s upcoming Podcast Hotel event (Sept. 6-8, 2005, Portland, OR). I was thrilled to be invited. It was also cool that Corante president Stowe Boyd interviewed me on this topic for his own podcast, True Voice. (More about these events…)
Last Thursday I participated in an excellent daylong Podcasting Bootcamp event, offered by the Da Vinci Institute. I’ve been pretty busy since then, so I’m just now getting around to posting that audio. (Show notes…)
Thursday morning, bright and early, I’ll be the first presenter at the Da Vinci Institute’s daylong Podcast Bootcamp event at DeVry Univ. (Westminster, CO). I’m very excited about this event, because the other presenters are highly accomplished podcasters who can definitely expand my skill set.
Here’s a quick overview of what I plan to discuss [...]
Well, for the first time in a couple of months I’ve produced a new podcast. Sorry about the gap. I’m still finding my way in this new medium. Anyway, here’s what I didn’t have time to say about wikis at last night’s event… (Listen now, and read the show notes…)
