Nice to hear your thoughts, Amy, but I'm not sure you've fully considered how painful SixApart makes it to move away from Typepad.

Here's my own <a href="http://foliovision.com/2008/11/17/typepad-to-wordpress/" rel="nofollow">Typepad to Wordpress saga</a>.

So if you have a dilettante weblog just for the heck of it, perhaps Typepad is acceptable, but if you ever expect your weblog to grow into something substantial either commercially or artistically, you are building your own prison.

Personally I never found Typepad tech support sufficiently competent or helpful to solve my issues without at least a week of back and forth emails. Typepad support don't even seem to read the support emails carefully. Much happier paying someone who really knows what he is doing to fix my sites properly the first time.

Thanks for the exhaustive post, Amy. But would you walk me through the business of domain names? How do you do that? is it the same as the title for your blog or website?

And I notice your blog was "filed" under a dozen or so titles (blogs, careers, journalism, etc...). What is that about? Where is it filed and with whom or with what? How and why do you do it?

Thanks for the hand holding. Roger w

Thanks very much for a great post, Amy. And perfect timing: I'm in the process of launching a blog, and have been wrestling with the relative merits of TP & WP. Your analysis is a big help, esp the details on security & multiple authors.

Thanks too to the commenter above (Susan) for her outlining her experience with WP. "Wrong template"? Or security breach? Or update issue? or hosting problem? or who knows what? Seems like the plug-and-play simplicity of TP is an advantage, even though it may not be seen as sophisticated as WP.

One quick question: TP has a nice widget to display the books I'm reading -- five thumbnails of the book covers, along with titles. Very clean. But I can't find anything similar for WP. Yes, there are book widgets, but nothing that neatly displays 5 covers at once. It must be out there, but I can't find it. Any suggestions?

Thanks again for a great post.

Thank you! Having blogged with both Wordpress and Typepad, I agree that Wordpress is best for geeks, but for regular people Typepad is better. One of my blogs uses Wordpress and I've had to hire professionals to help me fix problems, and to install the (frequent) Wordpress updates. And incredibly, the first 2 technies I hired to fix my Wordpress problems failed - only a
real specialist could solve the problem (I'd chosen the "wrong template" - who knew?).
I'm part of a fairly tech-savvy team blog called GardenRant.com and we tried Wordpress, then rejected it when we realized we'd have to continually pay someone else to help us maintain it. We switched to Typepad - which has support staff at the ready - and have been very happy with it for almost three years now. It's very easy to install custom headers in Typepad and
otherwise improve on its standard templates. Susan
PS I'm frequently amazed to see Wordpress touted without the warning that it's problematic for nongeeks. So thanks again.
