The Del.icio.us Bookmarklet I\’d Like to See

(UPDATE JAN 6: Aha, I found exactly what I want! This Del.icio.us extension for Firefox, from MozDev, does exactly what I want. Managing posts to multiple Del.icio.us accounts is no longer a hassle for me!)

Anyway, for the record, here’s my original posting…

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m an avid user of the my personal del.icio.us page of links, but I also post links to a couple of other Del.icio.us accounts that I share with my collaborators on various projects.

Unfortunately, if you use more than one Del.icio.us account, you’ll find that the process of posting becomes more cumbersome. Specifically, the “post to Del.icio.us” link (”bookmarklet“) that you place in your web browser’s toolbar to enable easy social bookmarking only supports one Del.icio.us account at a time.

I would dearly love it if some creative developer would build a Del.icio.us bookmarklet that allows you to first select a Del.icio.us account, and then post your link.

Here’s more information about my current frustrations…

Right now, my Del.icio.us bookmarklet posts links to whichever of my Del.icio.us accounts I happen to be logged in to at the moment.

For instance, say I was just posting a number of links to my personal Del.icio.us account, which I use to share links with the readers of my weblogs Contentious and The Right Conversation. Then I stumble across some links that are relevant to citizen journalism. That’s the topic of I, Reporter, a projects on which I collaborate with Adam Glenn. We recently created a Del.icio.us account that we share which specifically supports that project.

If I want to post those citizen journalism links to the I, Reporter Del.icio.us page, I first need to go to Del.icio.us, log out of my personal account, and then log in to the I, Reporter account. Then I can return to the page I wanted to bookmark and use the bookmarklet in my browser toolbar to send that link to the right account.

It’s a hassle, and consequently I sometimes don’t post links that I should because I’m in a hurry and don’t feel like taking the extra steps to post to the correct account.

Wouldn’t it be great if, when I hit that Del.icio.us bookmarklet, I got a menu of my current accounts on that service. I’d select one, and then bookmark the page as I normally do.

Plenty of people have developed plenty of great tools for Del.icio.us. Lots of them are listed here. One tool, loqu.acio.us deals with some aspects of shared or multiple accounts, but it isn’t really what I need.

It’s possible that the tool I want already exists, and I just haven’t found it yet. But if not, I’d love it if some intrepid developer would take a stab at this. I’d like it to work on the latest version of Firefox for the Mac, please.

I figure, it can’t hurt to ask.

  1. I’ve just released a beta of a new app that does this — if you’re on Mac, anyway. It’s called Pukka.

  2. Hi. I created a script to convert a del.icio.us RSS feed to OPML suitable for Juice (ipodder). Details here:

Hope that helps. If there is enough interest, I could turn it into a service so that you do not have to install it at your server.
