Disrupted Blogging Habits

Blogging is largely a matter of habit, and my habits have been disrupted lately.

Regular Contentious readers may have noticed that I haven’t had much to say lately. Here’s the reason: I’ve had a fair amount of business travel, which totally disrupted my rhythms. Whereas before I would wake up and usually start blogging first thing, lately I’ve been launching straight into other things. Like taking care of my clients first, and connecting with friends, colleagues, and family. And decluttering my house so I no longer want to scream when I look around me. And reading some excellent books. And reworking a couple of web sites.

Still, I should not have let my blogging suffer so much. This is, after all, a key part of my business.

The trick is, I think, for me to rework my blogging habits so they’re more flexible and sustainable when I travel or hit otherwise hectic stretches…

See, I tend to write lengthier, more thoughtful articles in Contentious than is the norm for a weblog. That takes a concerted effort. But still, it’s probably too much.

I’m going to try to write shorter, more tidbit-style pieces. I’ll see if I can do that without sacrificing quality. I think I can.

Let’s see how this goes. I apologize for being silent in the weblogging realm lately, though. But I did want to explain this apparent absence. Figuring out how to balance life and work is a constant challenge – and it can be dismaying to see how easily this balance can be upset.

Anyway, I’ll note in Contentious what seems to work (or not) for reconfiguring my blogging habits. I suspect some of you might find that interesting.

I’d love to hear from others who have encountered this problem. How did you address it?

  1. Amy,

Glad to see you’re getting back into it.

I had a similar problem, although my departure was for a much more extended period. Life, new work, old work… sometimes they all kind of compete, and the blog suffers for it. I think we’ve all been there.

My solution was to commit to posting something, at least every other day. Notice I didn’t say “writing” something. Just that self-imposed loophole has made it easier to get back into the swing. When I know I’m not forcing myself to write, just post. Could be old pieces I’ve written, could be interesting news. Doesn’t matter. Just so I post.

Your idea of shorter posts sounds like a similar (positive) loophole. I hope it works for you.

    Looking forward to reading more.

    Hope that helps,
    Rick
