After all, a blog is nothing more than a kind of web site supported by a content management system that provides a useful collection of features: Comments, a permalink for each post, categories, tags, a home page where the latest content automatically appears on top and earlier stuff scrolls down, etc. (If you thought a blog was something else, see: What’s a Blog?
Amy, I've just come across John C. Dvorak's Blog Primer. It covers some of the same ground you have here, but adds the useful feature of illustrations from some other blogs to make things clearer. Check it here: http://www.dvorak.org/blog/primer/blogprimer1.htm

He tries to avoid semantics too.

I am new to blogging. If I want to read a representative blog, could you suggest one or two that I could read as examples?
If I want to start a blog of my own, how would I do that? How is a blog different from a chat room? Since I have never engaged in either activity this difference might be helpful to know.

Amy -- I see certain bloggers as playing a big role in perpetuating the stereotypes. Political bloggers tend to say something is "all over the blogosphere" if a couple of the heavy hitters and their followers weigh in, which leads you to think "the blogosphere" is confined to that area. Tech-oriented bloggers tend to insist on all the things blogs "should" have.

I'm also not convinced on self-policing. I've seen a lot of blogs that are along the lines of the Flat Earth Society, and they're always preaching to a converted flock that will take care of any heathens who dare to leave comments to the contrary.

<trackback />Blogs can be more than "online diarrhea"
A popular misconception among some mainstream media is that blogs are just online diaries, so blogs are a fad. Blogs are a waste of time. Who wants to read all these stories about what people had for breakfast and at what time they walked their dog?

The other thing I notice is that weblog culture is not well understood by newcomers (not surprisingly, since they're newcomers), and - to me - it's hugely important, it's essentially a compendium of "blog best practices" that have evolved over time.

"…a blog is a personal/social
transformation machine."

I'd describe it differently - for the blogger, it's a time travel machine - you're converting the future into the past.
i.e. it takes A LOT of time... :-(
