One of my colleagues and fellow E-Media Tidbits contributor Jade Walker recently announced that she’s moving on to a choice position: night online editor for Associated Press. They couldn’t have selected a more qualified candidate…
Jade noted in her farewell posting on Tidbits today:
“I love the immediacy of the web and the limitless space it provides to expand on stories with slideshows, multimedia presentations, interactive polls, and community forums. I’m also a diehard newshound who thrives on a vampire’s schedule. So when my best friend recently asked me to define my dream job, I replied without hesitation: ‘Web editor on the graveyard shift at the Associated Press in New York City.’”
Bingo! Congratulations, Jade. I’m sure you’ll do a fabulous job. And I’m sure you’ll also help educate AP about the true value and uses of online media in the 21st century. Someone needs to put AP on the cutting edge of online news and keep them there.
Fortunately, Jade’s excellent obituary weblog, The Blog of Death will continue. I’ve mentioned that blog before. If you haven’t yet checked it out, you should. Jade is a fan and skilled practitioner of the fine, underrated art of obituary writing. Her blog presents a steady stream of timely and intriguing obituaries, complete with links.
…Incidentally, Jade told me that she agrees with the complaints I raised in my recent articles (in Tidbits and CONTENTIOUS) regarding inappropriate advertising and site registration often found with online obituaries. It’s crass, disrepectful, and directly undermines a news organization’s credibility.
Anyway, best of luck to Jade!
(UPDATE MARCH 18: Jade has just launched an audio edition of “Blog of Death” called Audio Obit. Here’s the feed for that show.)
