Alert: I\’ve Upgraded My Webfeed

If you subscribe to the CONTENTIOUS webfeed and want to be able to receive episodes my occasional audio show (podcast) via that feed, here’s an important update: You’ll need to switch your subscription to my new feed.

The address for my new feed is: http://blog.contentious.com/feed/rss2

Here is a brief explanation, and instructions on what to do…

WHY THE NEW FEED?

My original webfeed was available only in the Atom and RSS 1.0 formats. However, podcasts rely on the RSS 2.0 format, which supports enclosures (in this case, MP3 audio files). Therefore, in order to make it possible for people to subscribe to my audio edition, I needed to create an RSS 2.0 feed.

When you subscribe to an RSS 2.0 feed in a feed reader which also supports enclosures, then every time a new audio show gets posted to that feed, you’ll see a link in that feed item which says Enclosure. Just right-click that link to download the audio file.

You also subscribe to RSS 2.0 feeds in “podcatching” software such as iPodder, Doppler, or Podcatcher – programs that store your feed subscriptions and automatically download your favorite podcasts as soon as they are posted online.

HOW TO SWITCH TO THE NEW CONTENTIOUS FEED

In your feed reader software or service, simply update your existing CONTENTIOUS feed subscription with the address of the new feed. Again, that is:

http://blog.contentious.com/feed/rss2

If your feed reader does not allow you to update a feed address, then delete your existing CONTENTIOUS subscription and then subscribe to my new feed.

Once you’ve upgraded your feed subscription to CONTENTIOUS, check the feed item for my Jan 1, 2005 posting. You should see a link at the bottom of that feed item which says Enclosure.

If you don’t see that link, your feed reader may not support enclosures, or you may need to modify its settings to see enclosures. Many feed readers (such as Bloglines) do support enclosures. If you are interested in listening to podcasts, you might want to consider switching to one of these – or installing podcatching software.

I apologize for bothering my readers with having to switch subscriptions. Unfortunately, for picky technical reasons, I couldn’t seamlessly upgrade my existing feed subscribers.

WHAT IF YOU’RE NOT INTERESTED IN GETTING CONTENTIOUS AUDIO?

Then do nothing. My existing RSS 1.0 and Atom feeds, and e-mail alert list, will remain active. I won’t be leaving anybody behind. I’ll still be posting mainly text entries to CONTENTIOUS. The audio show (podcast) will be an occasional special feature.

You can always upgrade to my RSS 2.0 feed at any time.

IF YOU’RE SUBSCRIBING TO THE CONTENTIOUS FEED FOR THE FIRST TIME…

You don’t need to do anything special. I’ve updated the main subscription link on my blog’s web site to the RSS 2.0 feed. So you’ll automatically have the option of listening to my audio edition.

Many thanks to Tom Vilot and Kris Smith for helping me get the RSS 2.0 feed set up!
