Some kind soul has implemented a proper word count in OO.o 2.0. It's in the latest milestones - Tools -> Word count. It'll count the whole document and selection. *does a little dance for joy*

Maybe this will help - it's a macro for word count.
http://www.darwinwars.com/lunatic/bugs/oo_macros.html

I've been using for a while, and got via the open office mailing lists. As far as I remember it's easy to install & add to the function bar.

I've noticed though, that the word count in MS office gives different results to open office. I just haven't worked out which one is more accurate.

There's an easy to install Word Count function (that I think does everything you want) available here:

Hi,

OpenOffice 2.0 will have both the word count per document and per paragraph. That's at least what this (German) website says: http://www.informatikserver.at/modules.php?name=News&file=print&sid=5652

I used to use a script for wordcount until I discovered this information under Datei \ Eigenschaften \ Statistik, which in the English version of OO would probably be the Menu File \ Properties \ Statistics.

HTH

Another word count place is http://spellcheck.net/. I use their service to check all of my comments before posting them. Works pretty good, both as a spell checker and a word counter.
